Taking care of mental health during fertility treatment

For a long time, talking about fertility and infertility socially has been uncomfortable. We might not even notice it, but our awkwardness and hesitation around these topics make people afraid to share their struggles with others. This affects not just their fertility issues, but also the big impact it has on their mental health.

About 1 in 7 couples, have trouble getting pregnant. This affects not only their physical health but also their emotional well-being. Many of them, feel depressed and few even think about suicide. When famous people like Priyanka Chopra, Kiran Rao, Michelle Obama, Kim Kardashian share their struggles on social media, it helps to make people feel more comfortable talking about it. But many couples still keep their struggles secret and suffer in silence.

Infertility and mental health problems are connected. Infertility can cause depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. Women may feel sad, lost, or overwhelmed. They might even develop anxiety disorders or mood disorders. On the other hand, people with mental health issues are more likely to experience infertility problems.

Here are some suggestions to look after your mental well-being while you’re on your journey to conceive-

1. Infertility struggle can be challenging to both the partners. Communicate honestly and openly with your partner. Share your thoughts, feelings, and desires with each other in a respectful and non-judgmental manner. Ensure that you and your partner have honest and open talks, and encourage each other to express your feelings freely. Take an expert help from your wellness coach if needed

2. Talk to your family and close friends without thinking of Taboo. Many people still feel ashamed or embarrassed to talk about their struggles with infertility and mental health issues. This is especially true when it comes to losing a pregnancy. This silence can make it harder to deal with these problems. Sometimes our close circle who have not gone through this phase personally, may not even understand your condition.. opening up with them will help them help you

3. Keep in mind that your are not alone. About 10 to 15% of people worldwide are affected. Infertility is considered the fifth most serious health issue globally by the WHO. A survey suggests there are roughly 15 to 20 million couples struggling with infertility in India itself. Mental health challenges aren’t limited to women trying to get pregnant. According to a 2020 study by Imperial College London, among women who had a miscarriage, 29% showed signs of post-traumatic stress, 24% experienced anxiety, and 12% dealt with depression. Even nine months after the miscarriage, 18% of women still had symptoms of post-traumatic stress

4. In India, there is a big problem with mental health support for women and couples who are struggling with infertility. This means that often, they have to find help on their own. Many fertility clinics provide counseling sessions for infertility patients, however that few and one off. You may connect with Fertility Coaches, Fertility Wellness Support providers either virtually or locally in your city/area
